The central part of town has sandy, fast-draining soil, which makes a good patio base. We still compact it properly so it stays level.
In the Main Street historic district, at-grade terraces are excluded from review, but seat walls around them likely aren't.

100 feet, and 200 on waterways
The regulated zone covers land within 100 feet of wetlands and 200 feet of lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. The Commission discourages any work there.

On a single residential lot, work closer than 30 feet to a resource area, or building closer than 50 feet, is presumed to harm it. The Commission may require a naturally vegetated strip at least 50 feet wide, or 100 on waterways.
