Fall cleanup isn’t just about leaves. What you do in October and November decides how the yard looks in April: whether the lawn comes back thick or patchy, whether the shrubs make it through the snow, and whether the patio and walks come through winter in one piece. Here’s the checklist we work through on North Shore properties before the first hard freeze.
Leaves and the Lawn
- Keep leaves off the grass. A thick, wet layer of leaves left over winter smothers the lawn and invites mold. Clear them a few times through the season rather than once at the end.
- Keep mowing until it stops growing. Take the last cut a little shorter than your summer height so the grass doesn’t mat down under snow.
- Fall is the time to seed and feed. Cool nights and warm soil make early fall the best time of year to overseed thin spots and fertilize.
- Clear sticks and debris so they don’t end up in the mower or a snowblower in spring.
Beds, Shrubs and Trees
- Cut back perennials that have finished, but leave ones with seed heads or winter interest if you like the look.
- Pull weeds now so they don’t drop seed for next year.
- Water evergreens well before the ground freezes, especially new plantings. Winter burn on arborvitae and rhododendrons is often dehydration.
- Protect shrubs near driveways and walks from snow piles and salt spray. Burlap wraps or stakes marking the beds help.
- Save most pruning for later. Heavy pruning in fall can encourage new growth that won’t harden off before winter. Remove only dead, damaged or crossing branches now. More on shrub trimming.
Patios, Walks and Walls
- Clear leaves and debris off hardscape. Wet leaves stain pavers and stone and hold moisture against them.
- Check the joints. Top up joint sand where it has washed out, so water and ice don’t get into the base.
- Look for low spots or lifted edges. Small problems in fall become bigger ones after a winter of freeze and thaw.
- Clean and cover outdoor kitchens and grills. Shut off and drain any outdoor water lines.
- Plan your de-icer. Go easy on rock salt near new pavers, bluestone and plantings. Ask us what’s safe for your surfaces.
Gutters and Drainage
- Clean gutters after most leaves have dropped. Overflowing gutters dump water right where you don’t want it: on walks, patios and foundations, where it freezes.
- Make sure downspouts carry water away from the house and hardscape.
- Clear drains and catch basins of leaves so they work during winter thaws.
Get Ready for Snow
- Mark driveway edges, beds and walkways with snow stakes before the first storm. Plows can’t avoid what they can’t see.
- Move anything that doesn’t belong in a plow’s path: hoses, planters, portable basketball hoops.
- Line up snow service before it’s needed. Crews fill their routes early. Snow plowing and ice control.
